// Australian Electoral Commission
2016 Federal Election

Objective

Horizon was engaged to develop and implement the public relations and communications campaign in support of the 2016 Federal Election. The specific campaign objectives were to:

  • Increase enrolment, with a particular focus on young people aged 16-24,
  • Increase correct voting practices and introduce changes to voting,
  • Increase awareness of voter services.

Approach and scope

New South Wales has one of the lowest youth enrolment and voting formality rates across the country and this formed the basis of the media outreach strategy. Horizon engaged more than 25 target media outlets, distributing fact sheets, infographics and a call-to-action link for the AEC enrollment page.

Horizon also engaged with the Asian Women at Work Network who were running various ‘how-to-vote' sessions across south west Sydney, in areas where there are high rates of incorrect voting.

Outcomes

The New South Wales PR campaign secured 13 pieces of media coverage, including five interviews with the New South Wales PAO spokesperson.
